Türkiye recognized Bhutan long ago, however diplomatic relations between
Türkiye and Bhutan established on 26 September 2012 by the signing of the
Joint Declaration by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of
Türkiye and the Minister of State in charge of Foreign Affairs of the
Kingdom of Bhutan in New York in the margins of the United Nations General
Assembly. Turkish Embassy in New Delhi is accredited to Bhutan.
Türkiye donated 100 thousand US Dollars to Bhutan which was affected by the
Cyclone Aila in May 2009.
The then Minister of Economic Affairs of Bhutan paid a visit to Türkiye to
participate in the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed
Countries which took place in Istanbul, on 9-13 May 2011. The then Minister
of Public Works of Bhutan H.E. Yesvey Zimba’s visit to Türkiye on 6-10
February 2012 was the first high-level official visit between the two
countries.
The then Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bhutan, H.E. Lyonpo Damcho Dorji,
attended the World Humanitarian Summit held in İstanbul, on 23-24 May 2016
and High-level Comprehensive Midterm review of the implementation of the
Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) held in Antalya, on 27-29 May 2016.
Speaker of Bhutan National Assembly H.E. Mr. Wangchuk Namgyel visited
Türkiye on 22-29 October 2019. During his visit, Speaker Namgyel met with
Speaker of Turkish Parliament H.E. Mr. Mustafa Şentop, and participated in
the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) I. Executive Committee meeting held
in Rize, Türkiye.
